Do you ever have those periods in your life where you stray away from being confident in yourself? I went through that period this week.
I felt insecure about a lot of things, mainly by comparing my work with the work of others. I would find myself staring at their work, and looking at mine, staring at their work, and looking down at mine. And slowly, I began to feel quite sad.
I know you're never supposed to look at what other people are doing, but when you're constantly surrounded by people who you believe are better at doing certain things than you are, you will naturally find yourself comparing. Especially when it's something that you care so much about.
One thing that helps me to remember I am my own person, is dancing. I can't quite put my finger on it, but when I dance and spin away to my music, I let go of all my worries and doubts, and feel a sense of freedom. My own personal freedom. A freedom that no-one else can feel, but me. That's what helps me to remember who I am. Remember I have my own strengths, strengths that are especially mine and no-one else's. When one thinks like that, why would they compare?
Every single human on this earth has a gift. A gift only they can share with the world. They may be similar gifts, such as singing, but there is something unique and special about the way one person sings that instantly differentiates them from other singers.
Be confident in who you are, and your gifts.
If you find you're always comparing yourself with others, remember this: YOU have YOUR own gift that the person you're comparing yourself with doesn't have. That's what makes you, you. Comparing yourself with them, won't make you any more like them so why cause yourself such unnecessary hurt? All it will do is hinder you from you believing that can you live your dreams.
Find an outlet that will help you to bring yourself home, and instead use the time you spend comparing yourself with others to find, perfect and share your gift.
